Loose tampers are ok - not a big impact on extraction, but snug fit makes it easier to keep it in level. Anyway I do not use simple tampers anymore - tamping press is the king. Pitcher - I was surprised becasue imho it is perfect sized for single milk coffee and I still use it. PF - yes, I also bought NPF. And baskets are very good. Coffee scale... I have one but use it only for videos - looks cool ;-) Everyday if you have repeatable grinder then no reason to bother with it. You see how much coffee you get in a cup. I had to change SDB do other machine (and I miss it) but I "took with me" the double basket and the pitcher.

I prefer 2 hole-punching (I have the best ever 2h punch that I've had for over 40 years, and I love it that much), I might punch "twice" and get 4 holes. I Journal, so I will create my own spine/cover and pages. Have just subbed!

Great video, thanks. It's always nice to get a longer term perspective from reviewers. And I really like your white vinyl wrap on the sides of the machine - a very tasteful addition. I've been on the Dual Boiler bandwagon from the very beginning (released 2011 here in Australia). I'm on my second BDB now after my original was in need of some major maintenance at about the 10 year mark. It was going to be about $500 and my repairer suggested I just buy a new one and pointed me to a great sale where they were available at that time for AUD $900. Bargain! Your view on the tamper is interesting. I love the integrated nature of it and am used to the relatively light weight. But I don't understand the fit problem you're having with yours. On both of my machines the tamper fit the baskets like a glove - absolutely no movement at all when seated. Are they making these machines in different locations for different markets? Your view on using the filters and not having to descale is spot on. My first generation machine had the smaller (cheaper...) filters and I used them for the whole 10 years I had it. It never needed descaling in the 10 years I had it and the maintenance issues that led to it's demise were not related to scale build up (seals, probes, a tired pump...). I don't like the larger, more expensive plastic filters of the new generation BDB. Instead I only use two stage filtered water in the new machine. I tested the PH of this water and set it in the new machine and in three years of use it has not alerted me to needing a de-scale and has performed flawlessly (my original BDB didn't have this feature and couldn't be descaled at home anyway). One last observation: The price you pay in Canada is mad. CAD$2400 is AUD$2600. In Australia BDBs are available in store right now for around AUD$1200.

I found it surprising how fine i had to ground Arabica coffee to maintain a slow flow while producing a worthwhile cup. Edit: the insert you place on the coffee also helps maintain coffee bed shape, which i theorize helps maintain consistent extraction and flow. Also, I found older coffee works best with this brew method. Any arabica bean roasted less than three weeks runs a chance of the bloom displacing the insert. Edit: It's a fascinating brewer, though I avoided brewing light roasts with mine, as it had poor heat retention and the design didn't allow me to safely handle the device.

They are two types of Robusta in Madagascar. Both are great. There is Sambava and Mankara. Each are good blended with arabica for a Malagasy espresso blend. The samba a is a tad bit more expensive. Damn French.

Hey! I've been watching your dual boiler videos for a while now and I really like them! keep them coming :) I also own a Breville dual boiler and I've done a few mods to it as well. My latest one was replacing the original pump and OPV for a brass one, after the upgrade I've been having way better pressure consistency and the machine has been running much quieter as well!. I also read that this might prolong the longevity of your machine as the components are solid brass material and not just cheap plastic. I am only telling you this because I know you are interested in doing mods and improving your gear. If you end up doing this mod, I'd be very keen to see you doing a video tutorial on this as the only video tutorial about it is not the best quality, a bit outdates and somewhat amateur. I have been a bike commuter for about 15 years. My commute was 17 miles one way and my goal was to do this 2 days a week. I needed to leave my home at 4:30 am. That said I had 2 lighting sources, 1 helmet mounted as a primary and a handle bar light as a back up. I had 2 small panniers on the rear because the ride home was much different in temperature than the ride to work, this allowed me to shed layers of clothing when needed. I also had EZ to reach Pepper spray for people or animals that may obstruct your way. I also had an under seat tool kit equipped to change a tube and tighten most bolts. I also wore a reflective vest. Fenders are recommended because they keep your drive line much cleaner.
